Description

This wonderful book A Friend to All – Charlie Hoessle is a very interesting life story about the man who was the Director of the St. Louis Zoo. Charlie Hoessle started working at the St. Louis Zoo as a herpetologist… someone who studies reptiles like snakes, crocodiles, and lizards and amphibians such as frogs and salamanders. Charlie started working part-time and he added animals to the herpetarium. Then he started the education department and he moved up the ranks to eventually become the zoo director. Charlie hosted the Zoo’s TV show in the early years of public television. The Zoo named its herpetarium after Charlie, and in 2005 unveiled in front of it a life-size statue of him, draped in a boa constrictor by sculptor Stanley Bleifeld. Children of all ages will enjoy reading about Charlie’s early years, how he came to love animals and his work with the St. Louis Zoo. The book is illustrated by artist Shelley Dieterichs in her charming and whimsical style.
